Legrand's origins can be traced back to 1860, when Mr. Barjaud de Lafont founded a small studio for making porcelain tableware on the Route de Lyon in Limoges. In 1865, the company's activities were taken over by the brothers Vultry, who maintained the business into the next century.
In 1904, Frederic Legrand assumed ownership of the business, giving the company his name. Over the next forty years, Legrand grew to become one of the best-known names in the porcelain tableware industry in the Limoges area. Just after the First World War, however, in 1919, the company added a second business, a small factory producing electrical fittings, using the company's porcelain as insulating material. Incorporating as a "société anonyme" (SA, or "anonymous society") in 1926, the company continued to build on its reputation for fine porcelain, winning the Gold Medal at the Universal Exposition in 1937.
In 1949, It concentrated exclusively on electrical wiring devices (switches and sockets). The company very quickly extended its range to cover protection products (fuse-holders and circuit breakers, etc.), cable management products (trunking and mini-trunking), emergency lighting, etc.
From its origins as a simple porcelain workshop, Legrand gradually focused on electrical wiring devices, and is now the global specialist in electrical and digital building infrastructures. Fundamental changes over its history include shifts from porcelain to electrical components, from wiring devices to infrastructure, and from electrical to digital technology.Today the Group is harnessing the same capacity for successful adaptation to stake out positions in the smart building market. And even more conventional products such as power sockets and distribution panels are becoming interactive.
Since then, Legrand has made 120 targeted acquisitions, thus becoming a large, diversified maker of electrical wiring devices with more than 150,000 product items. As of 2006, it has bases in 70 countries and sales in 180 countries.
Legrand offers a comprehensive range of products and solutions that connect millions of buildings to energy, data and lighting. Its offer is particularly wide, with several hundred thousand references in seven major categories: user interfaces, energy distribution, building systems, cable management, digital infrastructures, UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and installation components.
